WordPress is arguably the most popular blogging engine, and it is still growing as a full featured content management system. Running on a robust php/mysql database, WordPress is up and running in minutes, thanks to the easy application installer. A large open source community adds value to WordPress with numerous plug-ins, themes, templates and more available to customize your blog. Plug-ins can be edited from within the application, and new add-ons are constantly being added to the gallery. With tools that include SEO optimization for Google and other popular search engines, WordPress is a perfect blogging solution for your website.
Installing WordPress was literally a one mouse click job. I was given the option of making the blog my home page or putting it in a subdirectory; I decided to make it the home page for now. It took less than 10 minutes for the installation to be completed, and when it was finished I received an e-mail notification. I’d had some previous experience with an early version of WordPress, and there have been a lot of improvements since then.
Setting up the particulars of the blog was simple. Just type in a title for the blog and edit the sample post and you’re up and running. I created some topic categories while I was in the control panel to allow easy search and archiving of posts.
The application control panel had a number of attractive WordPress themes, but I decided to drill into the WordPress tools and selected a theme from a large gallery of designs from the open source community. There are also literally thousands of widgets and plug ins to accomplish a variety of tasks, including SEO tools, PPC advertising programs, social networking utilities and many more. Just about anything you could want to do with your blog can be accomplished with one click, easily customized plug in tools. I added a Tag Cloud widget and a calendar to my sidebar, modified the color scheme, and reordered the layout to my liking in about as long as it took to type about it.
Posting items to the blog couldn’t be easier as well, thanks to Press It, a browser tool that lets you submit news articles, photos and more. You can add user profiles to allow others to create posts and add comments, and the clever Akismet plug in helps eliminate spammers and bots from comment sections.
Flexible and highly customizable, WordPress is a superior blogging solution. If you need an easy to use blog platform with built in tools for just about anything you can imagine, WordPress is an excellent choice.
